Last night the BBC presented this year’s 2018 Sports Personality of the Year award to Geraint Thomas, Tour de France winner and Team Sky rider. The 32-year-old became only the third Briton to win the race after Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome. Between 2007 and 2012, he won two Olympics and three world team pursuit titles on the track.

The Award was presented to him by Sir Mo Farah, who won the accolade last year. But he was not the only one to be recognised for his hard work and achievements for this exciting year in sports.  In the public vote, Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton finished second, who won the award in 2014, while footballer Harry Kane was third.

Other award winners at the Sports Personality 2018 included Billy Monger, who received the Helen Rollason Award for the inspiring achievement of returning to motorsport after having both his legs amputated following a crash during a Formula 4 race at Donington Park in April 2017.

The Young Sports Personality of the Year award went to Karen Adenegan and the Unsung Hero category was awarded to Kirsty Ewen for overcoming mental health issues to inspire others to do the same and find a better place through swimming.

And for letting us fall in love with football again Gareth Southgate received the Coach of the Year award for his determination and drive in the last World Football Cup which guided England to their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years.

This was followed by a very surprised and overjoyed Woman’s England Netball team which received the Team of the Year award and winning Commonwealth Games gold. A last-gasp goal from Helen Housby saw England record their first win over overwhelming favourites Australia since 2013 and gave us the greatest sports moment in 2018.

Lifetime Achievement went to Billie Jean King which gave an inspiring and encouraging speech to continue the fight for equality and justice in sports for all. What for an amazing way to finish off the year and congratulations to all winners and achievers that have and continue to inspire us!
