Founded in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, this French fashion house has received prestigious acclaim ever since its inception and was awarded the official ‘Haute Couture’ appellation from the Féderation Française de la Couture for its collection entitled ‘Artisanal’ in 2012.
In 1989, Martin Margiela presented his first collection, which challenged everything the fashion world thought they knew about luxury fashion and what it could be. Redefining men and women’s wear, Margiela continues to shock and delight the fashion community in equal measure with his innovative and often intellectual approach to design. Fusing masculine and feminine silhouettes, Margiela uses deconstruction, recycling and raw finishes to create pieces that are eloquently subversive.
In 2014, British couturier John Galliano was appointed as the House’s Creative Director, who continues to steer Margiela’s uncompromising vision through his own elegant, conceptual approach.
