Style and function – the history of duffle coats

The duffle coat is the outerwear success story of the twentieth century, and continues to be a staple of any discerning man’s wardrobe, epitomising timeless style and functionality.

As with most enduring garment styles, the original duffle coat was born of necessity, designed to protect WWI British naval troops from the elements. They were made of heavyweight coarse wool from the Belgian town of Duffel. This fabric was chosen for its hard-wearing and heat-retaining  properties, ideal for the purpose. The design is inherently practical, with a large hood capable of being worn over a peaked naval cap, and tusk-shaped toggles which could be fastened whilst wearing gloves.

The popularity of the duffle coat continued to grow over the years, and reached a peak mid-century, when fabric retailers Harold and Freda Morris were asked to distribute military surplus overcoats after WWII. They began to manufacture their own duffle coats following the success of the film “The Cruel Sea”, in which Jack Hawkins’ character wears the classic naval duffle throughout. Thus the Gloverall brand was born.

Gloverall continues to be the ultimate authentic duffle brand, maintaining their heritage roots in classic designs such as the ‘Monty’ coat, named after Field Viscount Montgomery, whilst developing new designs and variations suitable for the modern market. At Zee & Co we are proud to be stocking a selection of Gloverall duffle coats.
