Stone Island the Modern Innovation

The company Stone Island is one of the many labels started by legendary Italian designer Massimo Osti. He is considered to be one of if not the men’s clothing pioneer of the last 100 years and started many labels including Stone Island and the ever popular C.P. Company. Stone Island was founded in 1982 in order for Osti to explore his love of textiles and various different finishes that he felt deserved their own line to be allowed to fully become the products he wanted to create.

Massimo Osti has always been influenced by a huge number of sources including the world of industry that provided the different materials and finishes that would make Stone Island clothing unique. He was also heavily influenced by English riding outfits when he first created the brand including the shapes and extreme tailoring of the sport.

Being one of fashion’s leading lights since he started in the fashion industry it is natural that he would want to push boundaries with the new line Stone Island. He created jackets and trousers that were made out of material for use in heavy industry but recreated to be used in a fashion context.

The name comes from the writings of Joseph Conrad which greatly influenced Osti when he was younger and the concept of the brand is focussed in industry which is why he used industrial materials and industrial finishes creating unique clothing.

Stone Island stands out as a brand because they have made fresh and interesting men’s clothing that is one of a kind but is also incredibly wearable. It is this balance between design and accessibility that have made them such a huge hit.

The industrial materials and finishes the company used were a totally original idea making the clothes durable but also creating different types of material and styles. Even though Osti is no longer at the helm, the company is still fulfilling his vision of new techniques and experimentation in their clothing.
