If you love to party, the resorts of the Dominican Republic and Jamaica have some of the best nightlife in the Caribbean. For those who prefer the ‘when in Rome’ approach, why not party with the locals in San Juan, capital of Puerto Rico. Alternatively, if you have the means, head to St Barts, favourite haunt of many celebrities, and check out the Nikki Beach club.

If you prefer to spend your holiday relaxing on a white sandy beach with clear blue water, you are of course spoilt for choice in the Caribbean. Barbados’ Gold Coast is the obvious choice, with miles of golden sands and multitude of luxury resorts.

Best islands for watersports

Grand Cayman has perhaps the best reputation when it comes to watersports, particularly diving. The USS Kittiwake was recently sunk there to create a superb artificial reef, ideal for diving enthusiasts. If you prefer to stay nearer the surface, there are some excellent snorkelling waters in Antigua.

Most islands have couples-only resorts, but Saint Lucia and Antigua provide perhaps the most romantic backdrop. For the ultimate in luxury, pamper yourselves at an exclusive spa resort in the Turks & Caicos, such as Parrot Cay.

Best islands for families

Braving a long-haul flight with children has to be worth the effort, so for great children’s facilities and family-friendly beaches check out some of the all-inclusive resorts of St Lucia. The Bahamas, Antigua and Barbados also have some excellent child-friendly resorts.
